Ghana, officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa. It spans the Gulf Of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, sharing borders with the Ivory Coast in the West, Burkina Faso in the North, and Togo in the East. Ghana covers an area of 238,535 km2 (92,099 sq mi), spanning diverse biomes that range from coastal savannas to tropical rain forest. With over 31 million people, Ghana is the second-most populous country in West Africa. The capital and largest city is Accra; other major cities are Kumasi, Tamale, and Secondi-Takoradi.

Itinerary

Day 1 Itinerary: Arrival / Accra City Tour                 

Arrive in Accra, Ghana. Transfer from airport to your hotel where you will enjoy a traditional cultural performance, welcome drink and orientation.

After lunch depart hotel for a sightseeing city tour of Accra. You will drive through the administrative and economic districts of Accra, the capital of Ghana. This124-year-old city with has a blend of colonial and modern architecture that summarize her history.  You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, Independence/ Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. End your tour at the Arts Centre where you will have an opportunity to use your bargaining skills to shop from an open-air market for artifacts from Ghana and West Africa

Lodging: 3 Star Hotel in Accra                                                                                    Meals: Dinner                                                                                                                    Day 2 Itinerary: CAPE COAST CASTLE & ELMINA CASTLE

After breakfast depart for a scenic drive through the Central Region to tour the infamous Forts, Castles and Slave Dungeons of Ghana.  History will unfold the story of the slave trade which the impact is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today. Visit the Cape Coast Castle built by the Swedes in 1653 and was later taken over by the British. This castle also houses the West African Historical Museum. After lunch, visit the Elmina Castle built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is also known as St. George’s Castle. This castle was the first European structure built in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Day 3 Itinerary : KAKUM NATIONAL PARK

Depart for an early morning drive through the historic Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, one of West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests.  Choose between a 2 km nature walk through the rain forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral and fauna species and the medicinal values they offer or take a walk on the canopy walkway hanging 40 meters above the forest ground. Enjoy a lunch of African cuisine at Hans Cottage Botel while watching the resident crocodiles and busy weaver birds. After lunch, spend the remainder of the day relaxing at the beach soaking up the African sun. 

KASA (TALK TIME)-An opportunity to learn more about Ghanaian culture or simply talk to each other and share information about the experiences you are having on the tour. Your tour leader or tour guide leads Kasa discussions. (This activity is optional)

Day 4 Itinerary :

 ELMINA – KUMASI CITY TOUR

Breakfast at hotel. Check out and depart for a drive through the forest zone to Kumasi, the seat of the Ashanti Empire to explore the legends of the famous Ashanti’s, whose legacies are still evident today. En-route stop at Assin Manso to visit the Slave River. This is where captured Slaves had their last bath before they were taken to the Dungeons awaiting their export to the Americas. Continue the drive to Kumasi. After lunch, visit Manhyia Palace Museum, to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti kingdom. A regal history that dates back to 1700 is told with relics and artifacts. Enjoy a drive through the city with monuments dedicated to the memory of the great Ashanti people.  End the day’s tour at the National Cultural Center, which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of the brass makers, potters and batik makers.

Day 5 Itinerary : Ashanti Craft Villages

This day is devoted to visiting the three famous craft villages in Ashanti – Ahwiaa, the wood carvers’ village, Ntonso, the home of Adinkra and Bonwire, the Kente weaving village.  You will have the opportunity to see how African crafts are made and to buy directly from the artisans who make them.

Day 6 Itinerary : KUMASI – AKOSOMBO

Depart hotel for a scenic drive to Akosombo in the Eastern Region where you will check in and have lunch.  For those who would prefer to relax, they can spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool soaking up the African sun.

Day 7 Itinerary : Volta River Boat Cruise (Saturday and Sunday)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart to Akosombo Port to cruise on the largest man-made lake in the world, the Lake Volta. Aboard the “Dodi Princess”, you will dance to the sweet sounds of live highlife music played by the cruise boat resident band. Enjoy the calm of the lake and bask in the beauty of the mountain scenery and surrounding. Lunch is served on board.

Lodging: 2 star hotel in Akosombo                                                                      Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 8 Itinerary: NAMING CEREMONY & ABURI BOTANICAL GARDEN

Depart after breakfast for a scenic drive to Akwapim Hwidea, where you will participate in a naming ceremony as you reclaim your African identity. Enjoy traditional entertainment as you join the local community and move to the beat of the drums. Afternoon drive to Aburi Botanical Gardens.  This eco-paradise was created in 1890 for pleasure and scientific research.  It is a habitat for plants and butterflies from all around the world.  After lunch, visit the wonderful Woodcarvers’ Village, a great place to pick up that special souvenir from your trip.

Day 9 Itinerary: DAY AT LEISURE

Breakfast at hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, last minute shopping and packing in preparation towards your journey back home.
